Ways to Make Sick Cats Feel More Comfortable

It’s never easy to have to care for a sick cat. Like us, cats are prone to common illnesses and occasionally need immediate medical care. While medicine is available for cats, treatment is never quite that simple because cats can’t speak to tell us what’s wrong.

Here are a few ways to make your sick cat feel more comfortable while they are recovering!

Monitor Food and Water Intake

To properly recover, your sick cat needs food and water. When cats are ill, they will often stop eating and drinking. Monitoring your cat’s food and water intake is important to know when intervention is necessary. It is important to separate your ill cat from other pets in the household, so you know who is eating the food.

Fresh water should always be available. Healthy cats that eat canned food often drink very little because the food contains a high proportion of water. If your cat stops eating, they will need to have additional fluids.

Keep Up with Grooming

Many sick cats will stop grooming themselves. You must help your cat by gently brushing or combing them at least once daily. Any discharges from the eyes, nose, or mouth should be gently wiped away using warm, wet cotton balls or a soft cloth.

Properly Distribute Medicine

Give your cat any medication at the dose and frequency prescribed by your veterinarian, and complete the full course of treatment. Separate handouts are available that describe how to administer medications. If you are having difficulty giving tablets to your cat, you may be able to crush them and mix them with a little water so that they can be given by syringe. Ask your veterinarian if this is appropriate for your cat’s medication. If this does not work, contact your veterinarian to see if a liquid formulation can be prescribed.

When your cat is being treated for an illness, you must follow your veterinarian’s advice and instructions precisely. Take your cat for re-examination if requested. If your cat’s condition worsens unexpectedly, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.
