3 New Year’s Resolutions for Cat Owners

January 1st is a meaningful annual milestone for many people. As a new year comes around, many see it as a time of new beginnings, fresh starts, and an opportunity to realign with goals that may have fallen to the wayside over the last 365 days. You aren’t the only one who can benefit from making a few New Year’s resolutions though—your pets can too!

If you’re a cat owner, now is a good time to take the needs of your four-legged friend into consideration and prioritize their health and happiness. Here are a few ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will do good for you and kitty!

1) Stay on top of their healthcare.

It can be easy to forget about annual wellness exams (or choose to save money and skip them altogether) if nothing seems to be wrong with your cat. Our pets age faster than we do though, meaning yearly checkups are especially important for screening for health issues and starting any necessary treatments early. This is also a good time to consider pet insurance and evaluate your cat’s diet/nutritional intake.

2) Take their exercise routine up a notch.

Unless you have an outdoor cat, there’s a good chance your kitty isn’t getting enough regular exercise. Staying active is a crucial aspect of your cat’s physical health, as well as for providing mental stimulation. Make it a point this year to help them bump up their exercise routine. A few things you can try are leash training, learning a new active trick, getting active toys (laser pointer, feather wand, even an exercise wheel!), or just setting more time aside to play with them.

3) Spend more quality time with your kitty.

Making an effort to spend more time with your furbaby will improve not just their health and happiness, but yours as well! Try blocking out a specific chunk of time each week to cuddle and/or play with your cat, such as every Monday after work or Saturday mornings. Or, plan a new adventure you guys can share together, like a road trip, hike with a cat bubble backpack, stroller walk around the block, or even just a new spot in the house to cuddle.
